A strangely reflective, even melancholy day. Is that because, unlike our cousins in the northern hemisphere, Easter is not associated with the energy and vitality of spring but with the more subdued spirit of autumn.
Hugh Mackay

Eggs-zosted!

***

James Howell ~ Easter so longed for is gone in a day.

Great Easter dinner.  I’m Egg-zosted!

Amy Sedaris ~ My mom used to say that Greek Easter was later because then you get stuff cheaper.

Easter Monday is a holiday in many English speaking countries, including England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Australia, and European counties. The tradition of having a holiday on the day after Easter Sunday was brought to Canada by European immigrants. In some parts of Europe, such as Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic, there are particular traditions connected with Easter Monday.

  • One morning a chicken laid 3 eggs. The farmer and his son were watching this historic moment. Minutes later one egg hatched. The next minute the second one hatched. 20 minutes passed and the third one still hadn’t hatched. As the son was waiting impatiently he asked his dad “Why hasn’t the egg cracked yet?” His father replied “Cause he’s a little chicken!”

Almost everyone gets off work Sunday!

Wikipedia: Easter Monday is the day after Easter Sunday and is celebrated as a holiday in some largely Christian cultures, especiallyRoman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox cultures. Easter Monday in the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar is the second day of the octave of Easter Week.

When is Easter 2012?

Easter is the greatest feast day in the Christian Calendar.

Easter celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

What is the date of Easter 2012?

Answer: Easter Sunday falls on April 8, 2012.

From Wikipedia:

In ancient LatviaLieldienas (“big days”) was the celebration of Vernal Equinox on March 23. The celebration usually lasted three or four days; each day was devoted to a specific deity, though no source gives the names of the respective deity. At least one day is probably dedicated to M?ra.

Lieldienas was a celebration of dancing, singing and gaiety. One the first day, the Latvians arose early and rinsed their faces in running water. Symbolically scattering evil, adults scared birds away from the homes and surroundings.
Eggs were associated with Lieldienas. One who steals an egg will be poor. One who eats a hard-boiled egg without salt is a liar. A girl who gives a boy two eggs doesn’t like him; three eggs mean there is a chance she likes; four eggs means she doesn’t like him but will be with him because he is richer; five eggs means she loves him.

In modern LatviaEaster is called Lieldienas. Some of the old traditions survive and are performed at Easter.

Maundy Thursday ~ Happy 85th Birthday Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth II is 85 today. Today is also Maundy Thursday!

Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, born 21 April 1926)

Westminster Abbey, April 21, 2011

The Queen presented the elderly with a token of gratitude – Maundy money.

The practice of distributing ”alms” to the needy or worthy on the Thursday of Holy Week dates back centuries and is an important annual event in the Queen’s calendar.

This year, Maundy Thursday, is being held on the Queen’s birthday – the first time the two events have coincided.

Maundy Thursday commemorates “The Lord’s Supper,” or what is commonly called “The Last Supper.” Good Friday observes Jesus hanging from the cross, while Easter celebrates His Resurrection.

Maundy Thursday is the common name for Holy Thursday and marks the beginning of the three day celebrating of Easter.

Maundy is derived from the Latin word mandatum, which means “commandment.”

Christ said to his disciples near the end of the Last Supper after Judas departed, “A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”

During the Last Supper, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. This act has sometimes been followed literally in history as a good way of reminding rulers that they are here to serve their subjects.

We need to Resurrect this Tradition in North America!
